The materials may not be traditional, but the tailoring techniques and processes are very much bespoke in how items are made. Many pieces are hand stitched, especially some of the leather garments. In terms of style, my work is a creative eclectic mix that ranges anywhere from biker to steampunk to fetish and cosplay. Based in my studio in Heidelberg Melbourne, I have been making bespoke apparel since my adolescent years when first introduced to garment construction at secondary school. Having a mother who was a seamstress and an uncle who was a well-known tailor in Lygon Street Carlton during the 50’s and 60’s certainly helped. It must be in the genes. |
In the late 70’s when punk and new wave hit, I was at art college where everyone was making their own clothes out of whatever material they could use. Moving to London in 1984 was very inspirational, where so many shops and markets featured totally unique and amazing designers. In the 90’s whilst still in London, I learnt how to construct latex and rubber clothing which was very popular at the time at certain venues, and more and more people were also bringing out their leather wear for everyday use. This was a very interesting time where leather, latex, punk and fetish wear collided: all these elements can be seen reflected in steampunk. |
After a brief stint living in Sydney and making bespoke apparel, I am now based in Melbourne (since 2019) and offering my talents to those who appreciate custom-made, bespoke items. Whatever the style or material, all my work is based on traditional tailoring techniques and custom fitting. Lately, I have been interested in cultures other than my own, especially in medieval and folkloric garments, often using non traditional materials. |
Ordering |
Generally takes 3-6 weeks, but this is dependent on the item, material and stock availability. A 50% deposit is placed at this stage, with the final balance on completion. An initial visit involves discussing what the item will look like and a guide to cost will be given. Measurements are taken, from which a Block (also called a Sloper) is made. The Block is the Master or Foundation Pattern that is used to make a bespoke pattern for the individual and no-one else. |
|
Depending on the material, a pattern is created from the Block to make a Toile (a prototype or fitting version of a garment that’s usually made up in calico) so that the design can be tested and perfected. This will assist in cutting out your hand crafted garment. Once the Toile is made, there is a final fitting to see how the item fits and if any alterations are required. The finished, tailored item is then made, ready for collection. |
